This Thursday (8) the international press confirmed yet another death of a worker involved with the World Cup in Qatar. The news was given without further details by Nasser Al KhaterChief Executive of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Khater just expressed regret and offered condolences to the family. “Death is a natural part of life”he told reporters.
When questioned by the press about the country’s treatment of foreign workers, recalling the figure of 6,500 dead workers released by The Guardian, Khater got irritated. “We are in the middle of a World Cup. And we have a successful World Cup. And is that something you want to talk about right now?”shot.
Apparently the victim is a Filipino citizen. And the indications are two. One comes from sports portal The Athletic that reported yesterday (7) that the victim worked as a repair contractor for the Sealine Resort, used as a training and concentration site by the Saudi Arabian national team. According to the publication, he would have died after slipping from a ramp and hitting his head.
In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines confirmed that one of its citizens died while working in a resort south of Doha, capital of Qatar. Filipinos said they were working with Qatari authorities to clarify the cause of death. They also did not disclose the name of the victim out of respect for her family.
If the investigation proves that safety protocols were not followed in the episode, the employing company may suffer financial penalties.
