Understand the pros and cons of using Wi-Fi calling on your cell phone | Cell

Running out of network signal on the phone may not be an insurmountable obstacle to making calls, especially if the place where the user is has a good Wi-Fi network. Some Android and iPhone (iOS) cell phones have the native Wi-Fi Calling feature, which allows you to use the wireless internet network to make or receive calls, regardless of connection to 3G/4G/5G networks. Its use, however, depends on the packages contracted with the telephone operators, since it consumes the plan’s minutes just like a traditional call.

One of the positive points of the resource is that, despite paying for calls, they are charged at local rates. This means that, even if you are on an international trip, the consumer is charged as if he were always located in the city of his DDD code. In Brazil, Claro and Vivo offer the functionality.

Benefits of using Wi-Fi Calling

  • Minute pack usage: the biggest advantage of using Wi-Fi calls is local charging in case of roaming. The user is debited from his package of minutes, contracted with the operator, as if he were making a VoLTE call in his own city of origin, even when traveling internationally.
  • No charge for incoming calls: when the service is activated, incoming calls are also handled with locations. That is, no charges, even if the phone is not in the line’s origin DDD.
  • Recipient does not need to be active duty: another important detail is that there are also no extra charges for those who receive the call made. The recipient of the call does not even need to have the service enabled on the device.
  • It is compatible with other devices: Apple customers who use their Apple Watch to answer calls can be happy that their device is compatible with the service. According to the manufacturer, Wi-Fi calls are automatically activated on the smart watch when activating the Allow Calls option on the iPhone.

Disadvantages of Using Wi-Fi Calling

  • Not supported by all carriers: Claro and Vivo customers can make calls using Wi-Fi Calling, if they have a package with minutes. However, consumers who have a contract with TIM need to download the TIM Wi-Fi application and make calls using the app, configuring a similar service, but not the same.
  • Depends on internet connection: the stability of Wi-Fi calls depends on the quality of the wireless network signal the user is connected to. Furthermore, it is only possible to use the service if the phone is connected to the network.
  • Only works with active link pack: the calls also cannot be made if the user does not have minutes in their packages with the contracted operators. The minutes used in calls via Wi-Fi are discounted as in traditional calls.

How to use WiFi Calling

You can activate the calling service on compatible Android and iPhone (iOS) smartphones. For this, it is necessary that the cell phone has an updated operating system and is connected to a compatible telephone operator. If you meet the basic requirements for use, just go to the phone’s settings and select Connections, on devices with the Google OS, or Settings > Phone, in the case of Apple devices. See the full step-by-step here.

When you place or receive a call with active service, your carrier will switch from traditional calls to Wi-Fi calls automatically. If this is not happening, either due to weaker signal reception or a bug, the user can force use by activating Airplane Mode, leaving only Wi-Fi active. Finally, if the calls are not of good quality, it is always possible to use voice or video alternatives in applications such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, FaceTime, among others.
