Paramount announced this Friday (9) that “Mean Girls” will win a new film and, contrary to what many fans hoped, the project will not be a sequel to the original. After becoming a Broadway success, the musical version of the 2004 teen feature will be adapted for streaming.

“Mean Girls” follows teenager Cady Heron, who moves from the African continent to live in suburban Illinois, USA, and must attend school for the first time. Quickly, she discovers that the place has a social hierarchy led by three young people, known as The Powerful Ones.

The film was helmed by Mark Waters and stars Lindsay Lohan (“Freaky Friday”) and Rachel McAdams (“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness), grossing $128 million at the worldwide box office. in theaters, the teen comedy has become one of the most famous of the genre and a pop culture phenomenon, even inspiring clips by Ariana Grande, Manu Gavassi and Ludmilla.

For the new version, Paramount cast Angourie Rice (“Spider-Man: Far From Home”) as Cady, Auli’i Cravalho (“Crush: Colored Love”) as Janis, Jaquel Spivey as Damien and Reneé Rapp ( “A Vida Sexual das Universitárias”), who has played Regina George in the Broadway musical, returns to play the “villain” in the feature.

Lorne Michaels will return to produce the film alongside screenwriter and original “Mean Girls” star Tina Fey. She will also pen the script for the musical, which will have music written by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Directing duo Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. were set to helm the project. The premiere date has not yet been set.
