Some games do surprisingly well on the handheld PC
Just last Friday (20) the Digital Foundry channel published a video showing a sequence of tests that put the Steam Deck hardware to the test, making Valve’s portable PC stand up to some of the biggest (and heaviest) games released for computers in 2022including A Plague Tale: Requiem and The Witcher 3 next-gen update.
The Steam Deck is definitely one of the most curious devices released and drew a lot of attention in 2022 for its design and also for the capacity of its hardware considering its portability and relatively small size. Digital Foundry decided to test this to the limit, putting the device face to face with A Plague Tale Requiem, The Callisto Protocol, Gotham Knights, Need For Speed Unbound, The Witcher 3 e Uncharted 4comparing the experiences with that of more basic consoles like the PS4.

A Plague Tale Requiem, notorious for being a pretty heavy release for both PC and consoles, ended up running well on the Steam Deck and delivering a steady 30fps at various times (using the system’s frame limiter). The biggest drops in FPS were noticed in more urban areas of the scenario, where the CPU ends up becoming the bottleneck of the system and couldn’t keep the gameplay very well.

Other games like Need For Speed Unbound, Uncharted 4: Legacy of Thieves Collection, and even the next-gen version of The Witcher 3 run just fine on Steam Deck, with little or no dips from the stable 30fps. That is, of course, considering the reductions in resolution and graphics quality required to scale games to the handheld.

In general, releases this big and complex like this, the biggest problem really seems to be in the CPU. It is, in general, responsible for the large frame drops and for her that Gotham Knights did not reach 30fps in basically no time. The Callisto Protocol also has a lot of frame jitter.
