Newly Released ’80s and ’90s Classics on HBO MAX to Enjoy This Summer!

Vacation. Summer. Time to enjoy the beginning of the year in January. For moviegoers, this is yet another special occasion to discover and watch a large number of films on streaming platforms. The topic of this new article is HBO Max, which includes Warner properties in its collection. But not only that, as the company recently closed an agreement with Sony (Columbia) to also make its works available, giving fans much more options. For example, HBO Max carries recent successes from the fellow studio, such as Spider-Man: Never Go Home, Uncharted – Off the Map, Bullet Train, A Place Far Far From Here and the two Venom.

Here, however, we decided to focus on a more nostalgic part of the Columbia (Sony) catalog, which HBO Max recently included in its collection. So we separated 10 classics from the 80s and 90s – of the most varied genres – that were recently made available on the platform for you to enjoy this vacation and guarantee the nostalgic trip. Check it out below.

One of the masterpieces from the 90’s, A Matter of Honor turns 30 in 2022. The film features one of the best casts of that decade, bringing together a main trio headed by Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson and Demi Moore. In addition to supporting characters like Kevin Bacon and Kiefer Sutherland. Based on the play by Aaron Sorkin, the plot shows an investigation within the US Navy, where two lawyers (Cruise and Moore) need to defend two marines accused of the death of a colleague, after a prank has gone out of control. His investigation reaches the highest level of command of a military base, where a colonel (Nicholson) may have a connection with what happened. The work has one of the most exciting courtroom scenes in the seventh art at its end.

And if Matter of Honor turns 30 in 2022, this drama, which also features one of the best casts of the decade and also addresses a trial in its ending, will complete three decades in 2023. Have you ever imagined a film that would unite the Oscar winners Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington? No need to wonder anymore, it’s available on HBO Max. Apart from that, the film deals with an issue that is still very delicate in our society, homophobia and prejudice against people with HIV. Imagine 30 years ago. Precisely because the way he deals with such a situation was the view of the time, many activists considered Philadelphia dated in his speech, even with good intentions. Tom Hanks lives a trendy lawyer for a firm. After his superiors discover he is gay and has AIDS, he is fired. Now, he will need the help of a homophobic lawyer (Washington) to win this case.

Take the time to watch:

The stars of this modern and stylish Western directed by none other than Sam Raimi (Evil Dead trilogy and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) are Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman. But as times are different now, the names that call the most attention in the cast for the current generation are Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe. In the plot, Sharon Stone (one of the hottest names of the time) lives Ellen, a woman in search of revenge against the man who killed her father. And for that she becomes an excellent and fast gunslinger in the wild west. She’s after the head of Herod (the great Gene Hackman), who now controls a small town. To get revenge, she will need to sign up for a bullet duel championship, where the winner wins life and the loser goes six feet underground. Crowe plays Cort, a former gunslinger turned reverend, and DiCaprio plays Kid, a cocky young man trying to prove himself to his father.

If we look deeper we can find a theme for this article, something in common in some of the items presented in the list. And this element is actor Kevin Bacon. That’s because this is the second film in which the star is present and it will not be the last. Here he has a more prominent character in the role of David, one of five young medical students who discover a very disturbing hobby: they like to die and be brought back to life by their colleagues. The purpose of this deadly “joke” is to show that they are really good at separating the boundary that defines life and death. What they didn’t count on, however, is that by “dying” and being brought back, something supernatural would come back with them. Oh yes, rounding out the cast like the other young doctors are names like Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt. Directed by Joel Schumacher.

Well, by now you must be wondering where were the 80’s movies announced in the title of this article – since the first four items were all from the 90’s. with this hit comedy that, among other things, serves as a tribute to the late departed Kirstie Alley. Not to mention her famous role on the Cheers series, the actress will definitely be remembered for her participation in this children’s comedy and its sequels. In the plot, Alley plays a woman who becomes pregnant by her scoundrel boyfriend, who is married. So, willing to be a single mother, she meets a nice guy, who is the taxi driver who takes her to the hospital on the day she is going to give birth (John Travolta’s role). The great thing about the film is that we can hear the thoughts of baby Mikey, with the voice of star Bruce Willis.

We continue through the 80s with this film, which is one of the epicenters of the movement known as the “Brat Pack”, that is, the films starring a group of young actors of the time, who often worked together. The curious thing is that in Portuguese the film gained a huge title – in the original it was just St. Elmo’s Fire. In this production, written and directed by Joel Schumacher (who could also be one of the subjects of this article, in his second work on the list), we follow the misadventures of seven friends from their college days, now in their adult lives, having to deal with work, relationships and everything else. Imagine if the Friends series had seven friends instead of six, and was more focused on drama to understand a little more what the feature meant for the 80s generation. In the group we have three women (Demi Moore, Ally Sheedy and Mare Winningham ) and four men (Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy and Judd Nelson).

Speaking of Friends, who stars in this film that now makes the list is Chandler himself, Matthew Perry. The series of six friends living in New York (which is also available in the HBO Max catalog) is one of the most successful sitcoms on TV, and in 1997 it was in full swing, having premiered three years earlier. At the same time, film producers from the most varied studios saw great potential in the stars of the program, casting them in film productions. Each of the six Friends had their moment of glory on the big screen and, as we know, the luckiest one was Jennifer Aniston. But that doesn’t mean that others haven’t also taken risks. And Matthew Perry had the chance to star alongside Mexican Salma Hayek in a romantic comedy that addresses the different social mores of Americans and Mexicans.

Perhaps it’s hard for the younger generation to imagine, but Jean-Claude Van Damme was once one of Hollywood’s great action movie stars. Who, you ask? Yes, unfortunately the Belgian actor has been relegated to “C” level productions for a few decades, he just turns and moves appearing in some more renowned work. However, from the late 1980s through the late 1990s, Van Damme quickly rose to the level of legends like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The great watershed in the fighter’s career would occur with Soldado Universal, who in 2022 turned 30 years old. Soon after came O Alvo (1993). Before taking the game Street Fighter to the cinema, in the form of a super production, Van Damme would try his most dramatic role with this Win or Die. The film is seen by many as a reimagining of the classic western The Brutes Love Too (1953), and features Van Damme as an escaped prisoner who ends up helping a widow and her young children on a farm, against unscrupulous businessmen.

On the list we have a little something for everyone, and for all tastes. Now comes a copy of terror for fans. Part of the “killer animals” subgenre that permeates the seventh art, Bats, as the title says, shows a small town being attacked by winged rodents. But these are not just any animals, but genetically modified bats – many years before Morbius (2022). And yes, here we have the duo formed by the local sheriff (Lou Diamond Phillips) and a Dr. specialist in the subject (Dina Meyer’s role). Save yourself who can.

Closing the article, we have yet another film starring the legendary Kevin Bacon. No wonder the Guardians of the Galaxy tried to kidnap the actor to deliver him as a present in their Christmas special, and Bacon has his own game that separates him by up to six degrees from any actor or film. That’s moral. The star was present in Quesão de Honra and Linha Mortal, but now we go back to the end of the 1980s. Here, we have a post-Footloose Bacon, still reaping the laurels of the musical. In the film, a young Baconzitos plays Vic, an experienced nature tour guide who is in charge of a group for teenagers from the city. The protagonist is Alan, lived by Goonie Sean Astin (who years later would become Sam from The Lord of the Rings). He is a shy city boy who will experience adventures and challenges on the best vacation of his life.
