Palmeiras beat América-MG 2-1 this afternoon and became two-time champion of Copinha 2023.
- Ruan Ribeiro scored for Palmeiras, and Renato Marques scored for América-MG.
- The title’s goal came out in stoppage time, when Patrick headed in after hitting the area.
- The final in Canindé had an overwhelming majority of people from Palmeiras, as expected.
- Palmeiras line up two consecutive Copinha titles, in 2022 and 2023, the first in its history in the competition.
The second championship closes a perfect season for Palmeiras under-20, which a few months ago had already been champion of the Brasileirão and the Copa do Brasil in the category. Since the last Copinha final, the team played 43 games and won 34.
Palm trees now reign in Copinha
Palmeiras was once the favorite target of rivals for not having Copinha, but now immediately wins two in a row. Even songs were made to make waves with the base alviverde, which responds on the field with a sequence of titles in the sub-20. Meanwhile, rival Corinthians, the biggest champion of the tournament with 10 cups, has not won since 2017.
The team reinvented itself after winning the 2022 Cup, and none of the holders of that title continued in the under-20. Some went up to the top at Palmeiras, others left the club, and none of the 11 on the team that started the final was a starter last year.
Palmeiras has another game today, but this time for professionals. At 7:30 pm (Brasília time) the team faces Ituano for Paulistão, possibly with a reserve team three days away from the Super Cup against Flamengo. At the base, there is still no forecast for the start of this year’s Paulista sub-20, which opens the category’s season.
Studied and balanced finish
- The game was even until Vitinho escaped for the second time behind the defense and played for Ruan Ribeiro to open the scoring.
- Afterwards, Adryelson stood out for América-MG, sending a ball on the post and suffering the penalty for the tie.
- America came back better from the break and had a goal annulled. Then Palmeiras hit the post.
The whole second half had América-MG with the ball, and Palmeiras with speed. There were three danger counterattacks, but all ended in submissions to the outside, two by Kevin and one by the substitute who came in his place, Daniel.
When everything seemed doomed to penalties, the title goal came at 47 of the second half. The corner kick was taken in the area, the ball was popping, it deflected and it was left for Patrick to become a hero.
Goals and key shots
1 to 0. Gustavo Mancha sent a deep pass to Vitinho, who crossed low for Ruan Ribeiro to score his ninth goal in the Copinha.
repeated penalty. Adyson made a beautiful individual move on the right, invaded the area giving Leo a pen and was knocked down. Penalty for America-MG. Renato Marques took the charge, and goalkeeper Aranha took it, but the referee still hadn’t blown the whistle. Not worth.
1 to 1. On the second chance, Renato Marques hit the middle of the goal and tied the game for América-MG.
goal annulled. América-MG even celebrated the second goal on the way back from the break, but Adyson was offside inside the small area. He deflected a kick from his teammate, and the referee overruled the move.
2 to 1. Patrick scored the title goal with a header, after the ball was left in the area already in the second half’s stoppage time.
