The NHL announced new All-Star Weekend 2023 Skills competitions this Tuesday (24). Among them, the League has added a golf tournament and one where players will try to knock their opponents out of a scuba tank on Fort Lauderdale Beach.
THE “splash shot” is one of seven events scheduled for the 2023 NHL All-Star Skills Day, which takes place on Friday (February 3).
The League announced that some players from the women’s national hockey teams will participate in the All-Star festivities. Alex Carpenter and Hilary Knight from Team USA, as well as Emily Clark, Rebecca Johnston and Sarah Nurse from Team Canada. Roberto Luongo, goalkeeper who is in the hall of fame and is now an executive for the Florida Panthers, will participate in the “Breakaway Challenge” as a celebrity goalkeeper.
The three new tournaments are:
Splash Shot: It will take place on the beach in Fort Lauderdale, featuring eight shooters, two on each team in the division. Players will compete head-to-head and be required to hit every target before attempting to bury their opponents in the dunking tank.
Pitch ‘n Puck: Using a combination of hockey and golf swings, six All-Stars will play on a par 4 course with an island green. The lowest score wins the competition. If there is a tie for fewer strokes, the longest stroke will determine the winner.
Tendy Tandem: One goalkeeper from each division will be designated as the shooting goalkeeper and another as the net goalkeeper. The shooting goalkeeper of a division will take a shot from a designated mark into a net. Three points are awarded if the shot goes into the hole, two points if the shot hits the target inside the net and no points if the shot misses the net. The goalkeeper of the opposing division will face three, two or one player(s), depending on the points earned by the goalkeeper of the shot. A save gives the net goalkeeper the points, based on the number of players faced. The set of goalkeepers with the most points in total wins.
Another four events return to competition:
NHL Fastest Skater: A minimum of four players will skate a full lap on the ice. There will be two rounds. The preliminary round will determine which two players will participate in the final.
NHL Hardest Shot: A minimum of four players will compete to see who can hit the puck the hardest.
NHL Breakaway Challenge: A minimum of four players and two goalkeepers will compete in a “shooting” competition, where a panel of judges will rate each shot on a scale of 1-10 based on creativity. Props are allowed and encouraged.
NHL Accuracy Shooting: Eight players and four bystanders work together to break four destructible Styrofoam targets attached to the goal posts, one target in each corner. The four players who hit the four targets in the fastest times advance to the final.
