Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic showed his power at the US Open by defeating Borna Gojo in straight sets – 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 – to reach the quarterfinals of the tournament. Djokovic, who has already won three Grand Slam titles at Flushing Meadows, showed an impeccable performance in this match.
Unlike the previous match, in which he had to bounce back from a two-set deficit, Djokovic controlled the match from the start, committing just 12 unforced errors, as opposed to his opponent’s 40. “I’m just glad I can pass in two sets,” said Djokovic, who also assured that next week he will replace Carlos Alcaraz as the world’s No. 1 ATP.
Djokovic’s next test will be against ninth seed Taylor Fritz, a 25-year-old Californian who has yet to lose a set in the tournament. Djokovic has praised Fritz’s progress and is gearing up for a tough fight. This will be Djokovic’s 13th quarter-final appearance in New York, and Fritz’s first outing at this stage of the tournament.
For women, Iga Swiatek’s title defense ended with a loss to Elena Ostapenko in a thrilling match that ended 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. This loss means that Swiatek will lose his WTA number one spot next week as that position is taken by Arina Sobolenko.
Another highlight of the day was the breakthrough of Coco Gauff, who became the first American teen to reach the quarter-finals in a row in several years since Serena Williams more than two decades ago.
