Dwayne Johnson Opens Up About The Cancellation Of Henry Cavill’s Superman

The DC Cinematic Universe has been full of ups and downs in recent years, especially when it comes to the portrayal of Superman. And now, Dwayne Johnson, star of the upcoming DC movie Black Adam, has shared his thoughts on the Man of Steel’s future in the DCU.

In an interview with Variety, Johnson discussed DC Studios’ decision to drop plans for Henry Cavill’s return as Superman. “All we could do when we were making Black Adam was do our best, surround ourselves with the best people and make the best movie possible,” he said. “Our audience score was over 90%. Critics took some jabs, but that’s just part of the deal. But I think it’s almost like when you have a professional football team and your quarterback wins championships, the coach wins championships, and (then) you have a new owner. And a new owner comes along and says, ‘Not my coach, not my quarterback. I’m going with someone new.’”

Cavill was originally slated to reprise the role of Superman in a belated sequel to Man of Steel, after making a brief cameo in Black Adam’s mid-credits scene. However, when James Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-chairman and co-CEO of DC Studios in late 2022, they canceled Man of Steel 2 in favor of rebooting the Superman franchise. Cavill was also ousted as Superman from the DCU, as the reboot, Superman: Legacy, follows the adventures of a younger incarnation of the Last Son of Krypton.

Rumors have since persisted online that Cavill’s cameo in another upcoming DCU blockbuster, The Flash, has also been cancelled. Cavill was reportedly slated to appear alongside Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Sasha Calle (Supergirl) and Michael Keaton (Batman) during The Flash’s finale. Sources close to The Flash claim that this scene is no longer in the movie, and that a new ending has been created. This ending supposedly replaces Superman, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Batman with a single mysterious character related to the DCU’s distant past.

Although it seems that Cavill’s time as the Man of Steel has come to an end, Gunn insists that he and the British actor have a positive relationship. In a December 2022 tweet, the DC Studios co-chairman revealed that he and Cavill had discussed the possibility of the actor being involved in other DCU projects in the future, though nothing is official at this time.
