Only Palm And Iron introduced innovations in the elections to the Senate regarding Canary Islands. In the first, they regained the place that the PP managed to win back from the socialists four years ago. In the very west of the entire archipelago, the waters of the wild river in which the PSOE fished in November 2019 have calmed down, the area has returned to the hands of the Agrupación Herreña Independiente (AHI). There were no more substitutions, with hosts Angel Victor Torres clearly winning over the popular ones.
Eleven seats in dispute and seven for candidates PSOE, two for PP, one for AHI and the already traditional and indisputable fact that the Agrupacion Socialista Gomera (ASG) practically owns the Colombian island. All this with 36.30% abstaining, an 8.3-point improvement from the previous Senate election day.
What has changed compared to four years ago? That the seagull conservatives have lost one – La Palma – and AHI is returning to the Herrerian Palace on Madrid’s Bailen Street. The socialists do not tolerate on the islands the erosion of the bloc struggle raised in the country; they remain the same.
Life goes on
On the three islands of the province of Las Palmas – Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote – elections to the upper house could not even take place. It was enough to raise a sign with a message about the only relief that was given not by the count, but by the change of candidate. On the socialist ballot in Gran Canaria, Nina Santana did not appear on this occasion. Her vacant seat was taken by Marta Saavedra, who, like the first four years ago, was second in the number of votes.
Four senators from the PSOE and one, Sergio Ramos, from the popular. Only in Fuerteventura, very early in the tally and therefore with little sign of consolidation, was it a surprise that the nationalist Isai Blanco was in the lead. In the end, only an attempt at change, the socialist Paloma Hernandez – 10,596 points in the corresponding cell (27.72%) – will return for another four years – unless a new call for elections, which cannot be rejected, says otherwise – representing the Majoreros in the Senate.
To finish with Gran Canaria, and already said that Marta Saavedra -142,022 (34.42%)- will take one of the three places that were contested, the other two places, like four years ago, were for Ramon Morales (PSOE) who once again was the one who collected the most x -147,851 (35.83%) at 99.50% of the count put together with his name and popular Sergio Ramos (29.78% and 122,883 votes).
Therefore, the citizens extended their contracts for another four years and supported the one who was the CEO of Transparency and Citizen Participation in the previous government of the Canary Islands.
Another example of how the islands were islands in the fullest sense of the word, since they constituted the territory that did not reach the shock wave of the PP growth wave was Lanzarote. Moreover, this happened contrary to what, it would seem, was demanded by the sharp state-political fluctuations announced by the pre-election polls.. Historical Manuel Fajardo (PSOE) has widened the gap that separated him from his nearest rival four years ago.
In 98.9% of cases, he monopolized 38.3% of the actual votes cast, more than seven points higher than the result received on November 10, 2019.. A total of 21,303 citizens trusted him again, far behind Heziel Martin, who saw Fajardo’s back from afar with 13,639 supporters (24.5%). So that Fajardo, the first secretary of the Senate Council during the last legislative assembly, returns to the upper house, to the socialist bench, which has the worst face, but is stronger in person.
A very similar event took place on another autonomous community capital island. At the same time, not with the same candidate as four years ago. Ex-president Council of Tenerife, Peter Martin (PSOE), again won the island elections last May, but the force formed by Canarian coalition (CC) and PP frustrated his intention to remain at the helm of Tenerife until 2027.
The campaign and the result from La Palma created an electoral page to remember.
went into opposition after resigns from the presidency awarded to him by vote. Knowing what awaited him, he decided to avoid a vote of no confidence that would have exhausted the quota for the next four years. In addition to becoming the visible head of the opposition in the island institution, he decided to run as a candidate for the Senate.
In view of the result achieved yesterday, the maneuver can only be characterized as a success. In total, 143,928 people from Tenerife voted for his candidacy, representing 34.48% of the total number of voters with a vote count of 98.36%. His party partner Marta Arocha was the one who came closest to outshine him. The former CEO of Angel’s government division, Victor Torres, managed to attract more than 135,713 voters, representing 32.51% of the total.
Third place on the island of Tenerife went to PP. Thus, the Gran Canaria scheme and the distribution of the 2019 general elections were repeated. They only changed the names of the candidates, because neither Martin nor Arocha were at the start of the election race at that time, nor Emilio Navarro (PP).
The latter, a popular candidate, received the support of 118,920 voters (28.50%) and outstripped his party partner Ana Zurica by more than 4,000 votes, who has sat in the Congress of Deputies for the past four years.
Battle of La Palma
The great battle of the night took place at La Palma, which resulted in the Canarian PP losing its seat in the Upper House and falling back into the hands of the Socialists. There were two calls for general elections in 2019. The result of the first did not crystallize in the majority that supported the investiture of Pedro Sanchez. Former mayor of Santa Cruz de la Palma, Sergio Matos (PSOE), won the palm seat in the Senate this spring.
However, once again the parliament was dissolved, and in autumn the panorama changed. Matos saw his seat take off for the November 10 meeting. It was the mayor of Breña Baja (PP) Borja Pérez, who has held the post since 2015, who then took over La Palma’s representation in the Upper House.
Fabian Chinea (ASG) again won by a large margin, although he worsened four years ago.
However, in order to Matoš prepared for himself a double sip of political satisfaction in the elections. Yesterday I drank in one gulp. In addition to being elected deputy for Carrera de San Jeronimo, he saw the Senate seat, lost four years ago, returned to his party.
His partner in the socialist ranks, Kilian Sanchez, director of the La Palma Medical Center of the Government of the Canary Islands and Minister of Health of the PSOE executive branch in the islands, decided to fight Borja Pérez in a campaign in which there was not a single stitch without a thread for either side.
Judging by the close draw, both contenders did their job almost to perfection. The popular mayor of Brenusco began by having a position at his disposal and the degree of knowledge that this position gave him. Sanchez decided to reverse the meters he lost before the start of the race and set the message among the citizens that the island cannot have its representative in the Senate “in combination”.
So he began to shorten the distance. How was it possible to hold on to the post of mayor and, on the other hand, be attentive in Madrid to the necessary restoration work after the 2021 eruption? Borja Perez, just the opposite. His tenure in the Upper House was enough to demonstrate that both tasks could be accomplished with more than acceptable success.
And with that weapon they went into battle for a dispute, which led to the following result. Kilian Sanchez won on points in a very tough citizens’ decision: 12,652 votes, 30.69% of the valid votes cast during yesterday’s elections. Borja Pérez, 12,420 crosses next to his name, 30.12%. That is 232 ballots and a difference of half a point.
AHI has restored a place that disappeared in 2019 through the hands of Javier Armas.
IN La Gomeraanother triumphant run for ASG Casimiro Curbelo. His assistant in the Senate, Fabian Chinea, ran against himself and lost. If four years ago he scored 40.24% of the vote, then only yesterday – the comment allows for a thousand quotes – 37.96%. Irony aside, China won easily. He received 3,820 votes compared to 3,045 votes for his nearest opponent, the socialist José María Morales; The difference is 7.7 points.
El Hierro was the only other island where the capsizing occurred. It happened four years ago when AHI experienced one of the greatest upheavals in its history, if not the biggest. Juan Rafael Zamora (PSOE) was fishing in those murky waters, but yesterday the current was calm. Javier Armas regained the insularism chair from El Hierro by over six points.
