Review of “Perhaps Forever”

The film starring a cast of super stars: Richard Gere, Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon and William H. Macy investigates, in a comedy tone, the phenomenon of love and romanticism in adults over sixty, who appear immature and confused when it comes to giving the experience to their children, who are contemplating the idea of ​​marriage.

The story framed in the course of two nights plays with the presentation of the protagonists, jumping from one story to another until reaching the meeting between all of them. Grace (Diane Keaton) spends the night chatting with Sam (William H. Macy) after meeting him at a movie theater sobbing quietly alone. Unbeknownst to them, their respective spouses Howard (Richard Gere) and Monica (Susan Sarandon) spend the night together at a hotel. Meanwhile, their children Allen (Luke Bracey) and Michelle (Emma Roberts) have been dating for quite some time, but for whatever reason, their respective parents have never met.

In this sense, we arrive at the moment where we prepare to see that meeting between acquaintances – strangers. The surprise they will take when they see each other and how crazy the situation can be. Everything is ready, the long-awaited dinner in which everything will be pure laughter has arrived and the viewer is ready to enjoy. Unfortunately here, the big problem arises and nothing of the expected happens or rather, if it happens, but not in the way that it should happen, so that that romantic comedy that we went to see is really a comedy.

The meeting between parents does not generate anything. The characters (tremendous actors) seem to recite, instead of interpreting. The excessive dialogues, both between the older couples and the young couple, are conversations that seem to be taken from a movie from thirty years ago. Everything is too theatrical and nothing of the cinematographic language is used. Result, a mediocre film, which shows that a good script and a good director are needed, as well as great actors and actresses, to make a good movie.
