Death comes to the city
The big challenge for the directors was to pay homage to the previous films, they wanted to keep the legacy of the first four installments. So if Scream 2022 followed in the wake of the previous ones, Scream 6 wanted to open another path.
Therefore, the writers wanted this sequel to be more outrageous and flashy, but also more revolutionary and insidious. By placing it in New York, they sought to contrast the structure of the previous ones where they were surrounded by people, but the main characters were still not safe, especially considering that this is happening on the eve of Halloween.
When shooting in New York, they wanted to show the dark streets and places where its inhabitants walk, moving away from the tourist places, but always surrounded by people, not knowing where Ghostface might go.
Faces of death:
Co-writer James Vanderbilt notes that many slasher films focus on the killer, while Scream focuses on the survivors. And in this piece, he focuses on Los Cuatro Protas as Chad baptizes them.
The goal of Scream 2022 was to pass the torch on to a new generation, and in Scream 6 they were able to focus more on writing the four prots and make the most of them, especially with Samantha and Tara. So while recurring cast members talk about the evolution of their characters, the new additions talk about what it was like to integrate into a group and be part of such a beloved and famous franchise. Also, they confess that during casting, all the actors had to read Richie’s monologue at the end of Scream 2022 to see if they were right for the Ghostface role or not.

The writers talk about the influence of slashers on the general culture, as well as the patterns and homages that are repeated throughout the saga. But also that people like to be afraid, which is why horror movies are so popular. But if there’s one thing that the films of the saga stand out for, it’s the references and meta-jokes directed at viewers, as well as clues to get them to try to figure out who the killer is.

One of the things they were able to do in this part that they weren’t able to do in the previous part was that all the killings happened unexpectedly, in increasingly difficult situations.
According to stunt coordinator Alex Cadier, stuntmen were used for the supermarket victims, so they didn’t need stunt doubles. In turn, the writers emphasize that in order for Ghostface to fit in New York, he had to be more aggressive, as can be seen from the episode in the grocery store. This version of Ghostface is ruthless, he doesn’t care if there are other people besides his targets, so he doesn’t follow the rules of slasher movies. Thus, we see a more ruthless, crazy and cruel killer.
An apartment to die for:
Executive producer Ron Lynch says that when you watch all the films in the series, you notice that the fight scenes were very simple. However, in this release, the complexity has increased significantly, it is like an action movie, hectic pace and the need to stage risky scenes under the direction of Alex Kadier. Ghostface was played by Max Laferrier, a stunt double who matched up with the stunt coordinator on The Immortals.
Thus, we see how the scenes in the apartment and the flight up the stairs were prepared and filmed, which, according to the filmmakers, have not changed since the first draft. To record this, they first filmed it with experts in a real location, four stories high; at the same time, the actors filmed on the set, in which the facade of the building and the alley were recreated.
Night Train of Horror:
The writers admit that when they chose New York to shoot the sequel, the first thing that came to their mind was that one of the murder scenes should be on the subway. And since the story was set on Halloween, many of the passengers were dressed as Ghosts, so would-be victims couldn’t tell which one was the killer.
According to production designer Michele Liliberte, for filming, they had to recreate the New York subway on set. So they built their own New York subway car, 15 meters long, where it looked like it was moving due to outside lighting, but it was actually a static set, for filming from the inside. They also built a subway platform in a set where the train car just entered, stopped and then left the station full of people dressed as homage to dozens of horror films.

We see behind-the-scenes footage filmed at the Temple of the Ghostly Face, filled with mementos, trophies, sketches, costumes, and weapons that have appeared in previous installments. Although the script described it as a warehouse, Michelle Liliberte suggested that it was an abandoned movie theater and everyone was excited about the idea.
To recreate it, they had to go through the entire franchise, highlighting the most iconic killers and items from each murder. It was a real pleasure for the production designer to recreate this museum dedicated to the entire saga, with hundreds of references, with many views finally on screen.
