‘The Outsiders’, a renewed story at La Jolla Playhouse

San Diego dresses up in luxury with the arrival at La Jolla Playhouse of the musical The Outsiders, the piece adapted from the famous novel by Susan Eloise Hinton published in 1967 and brought to the big screen by Francis Ford Coppola in 1983.

And we say it’s a luxury because this musical, which will be running until April 2, is based on the script by Adam Rapp, a Pulitzer Prize finalist. Music and lyrics are provided by Jamestown Revival. And as if that were not enough, Justine Levine, she does the musical supervision, the arrangements and the orchestration. The choreography is in charge of Rick and Jeff Kuperman. Directing is provided by Danya Taymor. In other words, we have the opportunity to enjoy a whole series of talents and stars inside, outside and behind the scenes.

Seeing The Outsiders in its musical version is a privilege that no one should miss.

For those who don’t know or don’t remember, The Outsiders is a story that defined an entire generation. The novel tells the story of Ponyboy Curtis and Johny Cade and their struggles with good and evil in a society where they are seen as outsiders.

The story takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1967 in the context of a society hardened by the great social differences between rich and poor, in which Outsiders fight to survive, seeking a purpose in a world that will hardly accept them.

This is a story that speaks to the bonds brothers share and the hopes we all hold on to. “Without a doubt, this musical updates the story of the haves and have-nots,” says Sonia Diaz, spokeswoman for the La Jolla Playhouse.

“It is with great excitement that we are wrapping up the 2022/2023 season by presenting the world premiere of The Outsiders, the classic novel that has influenced generations, with an all-star cast and creative team that will renew the story,” said Christhper Ashley, Artistic Director of La Jolla Playhouse.

The cast consists of Brody Grant as “Ponyboy”, Sky Lakota-Lynch as “Johnny”, Daniel Marconi as “Randy”, Kevin William Paul as “Bob”, Brent Comer as “Paul”, Ryan Vasquez as “Darrel”, Da’Von T. Moody as “Dallas”, Jason Schmidt as “Sodapop”, Trevor McGhie as “Two-Bit”, Piper Patterson as “Cherry”, Kiki Lemieux as “Marcia”, and the rest of the cast: Annelise Baker, Jordan Chin, Milena Comeau, Barton Cowperthwaite, Tilly Evans-Krueger, Spencer McCabe Hunsicker, Sean H. Jones, L’ogan J’ones, Renni Magee, Tristan McIntyre, Junior Nyong’o, Melody Rose, and Daryl Tofa.
